Denizli is more than just Pamukkale
Pamukkale is Denizli's world-famous face — and rightly so. But within the province there are ancient cities, historic towns and natural sights most tourists never reach. Plan your day well with a Denizli travel guide, and you can see several of these alongside the travertines in the same trip.
Hierapolis: already on your way
Hierapolis Ancient City, included in your Pamukkale ticket, is the easiest first stop on any Denizli trip. A theatre for twelve thousand, Anatolia's largest necropolis and the antique pool are all right above the travertines. I cover the route step by step in our Hierapolis post.
Laodicea: the city named in the Bible
Ten minutes from Pamukkale, Laodicea is a still-being-excavated open-air museum with a colonnaded street and a vast stadium. Most visitors don't even know it exists — yet it's as striking as Hierapolis.
Buldan: weaving villages and old Denizli
45 km from central Denizli, Buldan is known for its century-old weaving looms, bay-windowed old houses and handmade cloth. A different kind of Denizli experience — living culture rather than ruins.
Tripolis Ancient City: a quiet discovery
On the bank of the Meander, Tripolis's mosaics are only now coming to light. It's one of Denizli's least-known stops — and one of its most peaceful.
Kaklık Cave: the little Pamukkale underground
45 km from Denizli, thermal water flowing inside this cave has formed miniature travertines, earning it the nickname "underground Pamukkale." A cool break in the summer heat.
